New Inspector at the 2nd Precinct

Yesterday was Inspector Skomra’s last day as top cop in the 2nd Precinct. We thank him for his work and for supporting our community’s efforts to keep the Eastside safe. May he enjoy a well-deserved retirement!

Our new Inspector was announced in a press release last Friday:

Inspector Bryan Schafer photoThe Minneapolis Police Department is proud to announce the appointment of Lieutenant Bryan Schafer to the rank of Inspector. Inspector Schafer will command the Second Precinct which encompasses the northeast/southeast neighborhoods of Minneapolis.

In Inspector Schafer’s previous assignment, he was the lieutenant in charge of the Juvenile Division. While assigned there, Inspector Schafer spearheaded the re-establishment of the Juvenile Division and brought it to a level that made it a model for other agencies throughout the country. Under the leadership of Inspector Schafer, the unit has made great strides to curb youth violence through programs such as the Juvenile Supervision Center for low level offenders. Schafer also established accountability through the Juvenile Crime Apprehension Team (JCAT) and provided continuity of juvenile crime awareness by getting Minneapolis Police officers back into the City’s school system. As a result of these efforts, juvenile violent crime in 2008 was down 44% as compared to 2006.

Inspector Schafer also brings with him an extensive career with Minneapolis that has experience with investigations, community response and patrol supervision.

We anticipate continuing our effective cooperation with the 2nd Precinct’s new leader. Welcome to the Eastside, Inspector, and best of luck!
